McCook, IL—October 1, 2024—Wertheimer Box, one of Chicago’s largest independently-owned leaders in corrugated packaging, is proudly celebrating its 85th anniversary this month during National Manufacturing Month. Since its founding in 1939, the company has been at the forefront of the packaging industry.

A family-owned business, Wertheimer Box is proud to honor the legacy of the past and embrace the packaging industry of the future. This month also marks the 20th anniversary of Doug Wertheimer as President.

“Our 85th anniversary is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and vision of our founders, employees, and customers. Serving as President of this organization for the past 20 years has been the honor of my life,” said Doug Wertheimer, President of Wertheimer Box. “My father, Ernest Wertheimer, started this business with only a handful of customers and a dream. I am amazed every day by how much our company has continued to grow and evolve with the times. I am grateful to everyone who came before us and to our hard-working team today. They have been fundamental to making us the dynamic business we are today.”

Doug Wertheimer celebrates 85 years as president of Wertheimer Box

As the corrugated box company celebrates its 85th year of business, President Doug Wertheimer celebrates 20 years in his current role.

Over the past 85 years, Wertheimer Box has grown from a small distribution office to a 70,000-square-foot warehouse in Chicago to a sprawling 303,000-square-foot space in McCook, Illinois. Wertheimer started with one employee and has grown to a team of 140 full-time employees, bucking both a U.S. and an Illinois trend.

Between 1990 and 2020 alone, Illinois lost about 58% of its manufacturing jobs, dropping to an all-time low of 534,700 in May 2020. In August of this year, it had gained back just 42,800 manufacturing jobs. Illinois ranks fifth in terms of the nation’s manufacturing employment.

Wertheimer Box remains committed to innovation and excellence. Looking ahead, the company plans to continue providing its customers with the best available packaging options. Adopting this forward-looking approach ensures that Wertheimer Box will continue to lead and adapt in the ever-changing market and ensure the company will be around for another 85 years.
