For 15 years, Wertheimer Box has been supplying corrugated display shippers for a nationally known mustard producer.

The Challenge: Modernizing a Food Production Plant

Last spring, the company reached out to present us with a challenge. It wanted to modernize its plant. The condiment producer had been using the same equipment to form its trays and partitions for more than 50 years. This equipment also generated the display shippers for its products.

Over the years, the equipment had become obsolete. It slowed down, became messy, and could no longer be maintained.

The mustard supplier asked Wertheimer Box to help develop a modern packaging department for its plant.

The goal?

To acquire new equipment to package the mustard jars that was faster, cleaner and more economical to operate.

Our Solution: Developing New Packaging

Wertheimer Box partnered with a manufacturer of case erecting equipment. Together, we collaborated so that the equipment manufacturer could develop a modern packaging line. This new equipment line could handle a greatly increased volume of mustard bottles.

Additionally, the jars would now be dropped into a display shipper using robotic technology. This eliminated the need for die cut trays and inserts.

At Wertheimer Box, we developed regular slotted containers (RSCs) and display shippers with die cut windows. We sent test boxes to the case erecting equipment manufacturer to ensure that the structure of the boxes was precise and able to perform both as a shipper and as display packaging.

To achieve standardization and to reduce set-up times when using the robotic technology, Wertheimer Box was able to limit the various sizes of display shippers to just three—even though the mustard producer offered a vast number of products.

The customer also wanted to be able to stack the display shippers in the warehouse. Furthermore, it wanted to use the most economical board possible in the boxes. Using our software program and sample production runs, Wertheimer Box was able to determine the correct board combinations for both the strength of the board to be used in the regular shipping containers and the ability to be display shippers.

The new packaging equipment is being installed now. The regular shipping containers and the display shippers will be ready to be delivered for the initial production by our customer.
